Annalise Schweickart, graduate of the 2022 LifeSci NYC Summer Internship class, is a PhD candidate in biological data science at Weill Cornell Medicine and a consultant at Harmonic Discovery. Hear her story about how the internship program provided her with the hands-on experience to complement her academic studies and grow her professional career.

When I was a LifeSci NYC intern, I was an intern with Harmonic Discovery, the company that I currently am consulting with. I got the opportunity through LifeSci to do an internship with a startup. It allowed me to see what tools I would need if I wanted to go this route in my career. Not only did I do my research, I also helped with organization off-site events. I also helped organize the swag that everybody got with the company logo. I think that a lot of people think that going into an industry internship, you're just going to be working on the science, but there's so much more than that.
00:43 I would say that when you're in undergrad or in a graduate program, you don't really know what it's going to be like day-to-day if you decide to pursue an industry role, or a role at a startup like I did. And so the internship is a great opportunity to figure out what is day-to-day going to be like, what hands-on skills do I need past my learning, past my education, there to help me thrive in my career beyond my education. And so I can't stress enough just how much I would advise students to get involved in an internship experience like this, so that they know what the future could be for them.
